Join others eager to learn and speak Pennsylvania Dutch for a six-session series studying the language. There will be plenty of time for practice.

The series will take place monthly on the following dates.

All classes meet at 6:30 p.m. in the Mennonite Life Community Room

All levels of experience are welcome—from beginner to fluent speaker!

Informal lessons will be based on the book Speaking Amish: A Beginner’s Introduction to Pennsylvania German by Lillian Stoltzfus. Speaking Amish is available in the Mennonite Life store, and the online store.

Christian Herr was a prominent leader in the 18th century Mennonite Community. Years after his death Lancaster Mennonites were still referred to as the Christian Herr Party.

Indigenous Peoples taught the Herr family and other Mennonites how to hunt game, clear heavily forested land, and how to identify native plants.
