The 1719 Museum is seeking adult community members to guide tours of the Herr House and Lancaster Longhouse at the 1719 Museum on Fridays and Saturdays, April through October.

Scheduling is flexible; volunteers are asked to commit to at least one tour date per month.

Requirements:  An interest in history and desire to learn.  Willingness to speak to groups of two to fifteen adults.  Must be at least 18 years old. Must obtain and supply copies of the PA Criminal Record Check; PA Child Abuse Clearance; FBI Fingerprint Record Check.

Note: Tours customarily involve walking over uneven terrain and up and down a steep flight of stairs.  Please let us know if you will need accommodations.

The tour guide training is a five-week course held on Saturday mornings from 9:00-11:00 am, beginning on February 11. See the training schedule below.

Did You Know?

The sandstone used for the Herr House was quarried on-site.

Christian Herr was a prominent leader in the 18th century Mennonite Community. Years after his death Lancaster Mennonites were still referred to as the Christian Herr Party.

Indigenous Peoples taught the Herr family and other Mennonites how to hunt game, clear heavily forested land, and how to identify native plants.
