Instructor: Barbara Garrett
Since participants will gather around the quilts, masks, and proof of vaccination are required.
Local quilt historian Barbara Garrett will facilitate the sessions. She has researched Pennsylvania German quilts of southeastern Pennsylvania for over forty-five years, including Amish and Mennonite designs.
This event affords a unique opportunity to view and study twenty-two of the best quilts from Mennonite Life’s collection, including some acquired from the Clarke E. Hess estate in 2019. Participants will also learn about the makers and their world, specifically the fabrics, styles, and patterns unique to the quilts of this region. The quilt turning will last for two hours and is offered twice, with the same quilts shown each time.
Since the 1980s, Barbara Garrett has focused on quilt documentation projects. She has also served as a sought-after consultant. Garrett co-authored the York County documentation book, Quilts: The Fabric of Friendship. A queen-sized quilt she designed and made of feed-sack fabric became the demonstration quilt on an episode of HGTV’s Simply Quilts. Garrett has presented several study centers at American Quilt Study Group annual seminars. Her quilt turning events are well-attended and quite popular.
This event will be audio recorded for archival preservation.
