Join us for a candlelit evening of storytelling at the 1719 Museum. You’ll hear songs and stories passed down for multiple generations among Lancaster County’s Indigenous communities and Lancaster County Mennonites.
Your visit will include 30 minutes at the Herr House and 30 minutes at the Lancaster Longhouse.
In the Lancaster Longhouse, musicians will tell stories and play music of the Indigenous flute. In the Herr House, you will hear stories of music and songwriting that were important to Mennonites in the 18th century. A cappella singers will perform English translations of hymns from the Ausbund, a historic Mennonite hymnal used by the Herr family.
In the museum visitors center, children are invited to use coloring pages and art supplies to create their own fraktur songbook bookplate. This craft is a Pennsylvania German tradition of making decorative name labels on the inside cover of personal books.
The museum store will be open for the event. Joe on the Go Coffee Co’s mobile cafe will be on site with hot drinks and baked goods available for purchase.
Admission is $15 for adults, $7 for youth ages 6–16, and complimentary for children 5 and under. This event is expected to sell out, and walk-in admissions will not be offered. In the case of inclement weather, Stories by Candlelight will instead take place Saturday, January 17, beginning at 4:00 p.m. Purchased tickets will apply to the same time slot.
