Kannst du Deitsch schwetze? Join others eager to learn and speak Pennsylvania Dutch together! All levels of experience are welcome—from beginner to fluent speaker. Lessons will focus on casual conversation, with plenty of time for practice.

All classes meet from 6:30–8:00 p.m. in the Mennonite Life Community Room

The recommended text for the group is Speaking Amish: A Beginner’s Introduction to Pennsylvania German by Lillian Stoltzfus. Speaking Amish is available in the Mennonite Life store, and the online store.

Christian Herr was a prominent leader in the 18th century Mennonite Community. Years after his death Lancaster Mennonites were still referred to as the Christian Herr Party.

Indigenous Peoples taught the Herr family and other Mennonites how to hunt game, clear heavily forested land, and how to identify native plants.
